steering racks
o yes its another thread about steering racks... but ive searched and found alot of info but i cant find the specifics i need and im running out of time on the computer... ok so here it goes...
steering ratio...
i have an 86 gxl..with the 15:1 ratio rack?
ok now theres the 17.4:1 and 20:1 racks also.. im a bit confused on if the lower the number means the quicker it turns and the less u turn or what..could someone clearify this..
also im thinking of depowering my rack because i dont think i need p/s but dont want to do it the cheap way.. so i was wondewring a few things...can a 89-91 rack go in my 86..without modifications..(depower so i dont caqre about the electronic stuff)
also whats the 87 turbo2 manual rack ratio and can u put turbo 2 racks in non turbos???
thanks alot guys
sorry for any repeated questions

In general, the manual racks take more turns lock-to-lock.
For daily driving, a manual rack has more leverage (more turns LTL).
For drifting, a power rack takes less turns LTL.
De-powering the rack is easy.
Just loop the lines to avoid hydraulic resistance and to keep the rack clean & lubed.

For every turn of the steering wheel a 15:1 rack will turn the front wheels farther. They all have the same amount of total steer angle, but the 15:1 rack gets you there with fewer turns of the steering wheel. I do beleive that all of the racks are directly interchangable (S4, S5, NA, TII), although putting an actual 20:1 manual rack in a PS equiped car (or vice versa) will require changing one of the mounts and bushings, as it'll be of lower diameter (I'm not 100% sure on that last part, but I think it's right).
Search for the original thread that I started on the depowered rack (it goes on beyond the archived one). In there Icamark layed out what cars had what ratio racks.
