Steering influenced by bumps, grooves, etc

My guess is tie rods but I want some insight.
If I'm driving down the road and there's a shallow pot hole or bump, my steering wheel goes in the direction of the tire that hit it very hard and not safe.
Or if I'm driving through an intersection, the steering wheel goes all over the place.
When I'm driving in a straight line, it stays straight with very little play in the steering wheel, seems nice an tight.

I just want to make sure its tie rods and not me who messed up on the depowering the power steering.

Thanks

bad ball joint.sounds like what I had going on.
Jack the car up on the Front subframe( you can get a jack under there!)
then Pop the wheels off.
put a Crowbar in between the lower control arm and the Spindle..(I used a big screwdriver) .IF there is any UP and down play,it is Toast...the rubber boot may look good, but hey are a deceptive bugger!..They make the steering wheel shake side to side..at about 40mph and up.

will do, easy enough to check.
And I can't get a jack on my subframe, I have to jack the rear up a bit with a small jack and then use the frame rails :P
