Starts up but dies..what's wrong?

an 88 n/a mazda rx-7 starts fine, but dies after startup (sometimes with a bit of surging). if you hold the pedal down, it will stay alive, but as soon as you let off.. Poop

Where does the problem lay?

Until the gurus come to save the day...

I'd check out your air mass meter and CAS first off. Specifically the plug on the air mass meter, mine had pushed one of its wires back out of its connector and was causing a start and stall problem. I've heard of other cars having a start and stall problem when their CAS (or similar) is acting up. Give us some background too on what was going on before the problem.

Cool

This is one of the reasons I love this forum. Is the great help you get.

Two weeks ago I started my RX and suddenly it just died. I could get her to restart after some cranking, but once started you have to keep the rpms up and the moment the foot goes off the gas pedal she dies. I had her towed from the office to my house, bless AAA, and been going nuts trying to figure out what is going on. I have her scheduled for the local Mazda shop to look at. I was about to post and noticed this thread. The problems sound similar except my RX is a hard start.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I'm havin the same issue right now, actually. The guy I go to thinks I could have a bad injector. I found a used set, which I'm sending off to be rebuilt. We'll see what happens when they get back.

check for cracked hoses ie maf hose between the sensor and the throttle body. also check the clamps on it and did the car run prior to parking it? could be a loose vacuum line, misadjusted variable resistor, bad maf plug, bad tps, improperly adjust throttle plates/throttle cable. what had changed or been worked on since the last time it ran?
