You have a stuck throttle or a vacuum leak. I would lean towards the stuck throttle. Try disconnecting the throttle cable and starting the engine.

Sounds like a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG Vacuum leak I started my TII yesterday after forgetting to bolt the Upper intake manifold down (oops), and even then it only made it to 2000 rpm, so you've got something big happening Try what Aaron suggested and make sure the throttle plates can close all the way.

i just had this problem last week when i finished put back together my engine. i had forgetten to put a lower intake gasket on and my car just shot str8 up to 4k+. after i changed the gasket it didnt do that, rather now it fluxuates between 800-1000 rpm, but i think that leak is from something else. its definately a big leak from an intake gasket.

sounds like your throttle cable needs to be adjusted my friend. do what aaron said, and then start it. you can play with the throttle with the cable disconnected by flipping the swing arm on that controls the TB.
