Starting Problem

Okay, I have searched around the forums and I have found many threads on starting and idle issues, but none that are exactly like mine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The car starts just fine, revs up to 3000 RPM but then almost instantly starts going down. If I give it just a little gas it will go back up and idle just fine. If I don't give it any gas, it will idle down and stall out.

Other than this the car runs and idles just fine.

1988 GXL N/A. 20K on rebuilt engine.

I have an 88 tII swap. street ported. My problem was after the rebuild the fuel injectors were clogged shut. I cleaned them then it started. I ran it for 4 hours to start break in. Now when I try to drive it, it will try to die in gear some times, and when i hit 2500-3000 rpms it acts like its not firing of getting fuel one. It flooded out real bad when I tried to get it off the rack at the exhaust shop. I burned up 2 starters. (the were starters my fault). So I got it running again and checked the timing and it appeared to be off. Not lined up at all with the pionter in the front cover. So i tried to adjust it and still couldnt get it right. Swapped in a nonturbo crank angle sensor to see if it would run and it tried but died again. Im gonna try new plugs. I also hear popping in the exhaust when it stalls out. I am street ported, stock turbo, 3inch exhaust, no emissions, no fcd installed yet i have a electrical engineer type friend that built one for me. Any ideas?

As for you is the timing right? tried to adjust the idle? Or checked the dashpot?
Hope i gave you some thing to check and try.

To the O.P It dies after you start it, jumps up to 3000 like normal then dies and after you start it again it is fine? sounds like a bad AFM to me....... I'm starting to sound like a broken record with all these AFM diagnoses.

check for codes.... the first im not sure exactly but about 30 seconds your car is running off of a base map then it switches to using the sensor one of the sensor inputs may be invalid causing the car to die. there may be a code stored in the ecu to help pin point the sensor if this is the issue

Air Flow Meter, or Mass Air Flow sensor.... (AFM or MAF.... whichever you prefer.) If you still have the stock airbox, it should be a silver contraption with a flapper just behind the box. (s4 right?) Test it with a multimeter spec to the FSM, make sure it is plugged in and all too. If it's not spec replace it. This happened to me when my AFM went out. BTW, if you haven't checked the FAQ yet, it's got lots of great information!
