Starting On A Cold Engine Problem
Hey everybody,
I have a street ported 88 non turb. It takes me a few minutes to start the car; the enigne turns but it does catch on. Then when it starts i have to keep the RPMs at about 4k so it wont stall. My engine will stall if i remove my foot of the gas for just a second and the rpms drop to like 2.5k or somewhere around that. Also my rpms when the engine is hot are about 600. Could i just adjust the idle speed to fix my start problem? What else could it be?

Set your tps:
Then use the idle set screw to set your idle to about 750/800rpm.
The idle speed has nothing to do with your start problem.
The hard starting sounds very much like a vacuum leak. How long has it been since your streetport was done? Have you done any work on the UIM or LIM?

Start the car, and warm it up well. Turn it off, and unplug the TPS. Now with a multimeter, measure the resistance between the top and right hand pins of the connector (the side attached to the TPS). The key is to turn the screw until you get 1 ohm. Once you do, open the throttle and you should have about 5 ohms. Plug it back in, and go for a drive. fter a bit, repeat the proceedure. It took me 3 or 4 times before I got 1 ohm with no throttle, and 5 at wot. Now, it runs perfectly and the resistance hasn't changed. Take a look at it again. Good luck,
Nick
