Starter Problems?

Sometimes when I get in the car it won't start. Is it a switch problem or what? Maybe the battery is going bad? The sticker on it says it was made last year, but it is the economy model. Usually I fiddle with things, like put it in or out of gear, push in the clutch a few times, turn off the AC fan, stuff like that. Eventually it will just work. Also the volt meter in the car drops way down to like 8 volts when you go to start it.

Is your problem one in which the starter engages sometimes but not at other times? And is this an S5?

Yes it is an S5, and no I think it engages everytime it just doesn't feel like it is turning over. It basically just goes click randomly. Other times it works great.

Are you sure the starter is what's clicking? If you have the factory alarm then the Starter Cut Relay should have voltage every time the key is turned to start at the Black/Blue wire of this relay. If this wire has voltage then it should also have voltage at the larger Black/Green wire in this relay. If both of these things check out okay then the Black/Red wire at the starter solenoid should also as well have voltage w/key to start. If all these things check out then either the connection of the B/R wire to the solenoid is iffy or the voltage wire to the starter or the ground wire to the starter are iffy or the starter itself is dying a slow death and perhaps the brushes inside of the starter are worn and are in need of replacement.

I was thinking about doing that. It works 90% of the time so I am not too worried about it.
