Spider Removal and Front outer port insert loose

Hey guys I just purchased a 90 S5 GXL or GTUs (Title says GLX/GTU) but has power evverything. The motor has low compression and I pulled and stripped the motor to the block yesterday.

I deffintly want to get rid of the air pump and the spider. I will be keeping the OMP. But I will be driving the car in the winter so I don't want to have trouble starting the car on -10 deg day while I'm sitting in the freezing my *** off. What should or shouldn't I remove to make sure it starts well in the winter. My injectors are leaving this week to be cleaned so I won't have a leaking injector problem.

Also, when I pulled the intake off the block one of the inserts was loose in the port. I thought they are supposed to be pressed in? Does this mean that iron is junk?

You're talking about a stud sticking out, right? An insert is something like a helicoil, which I don't remember seeing on a normal block...Go ahead and try to "unthread" the stud out of the block, like a normal bolt, with some vise-grips or whatever works for ya, being very careful if you have to grab it on any threads (if that's the case, use some cloth or several wraps of tape around the threads)...Get some locktite thread locking stuff (the "permanent" flavor if you can get it), apply to the stud threads, and reinstall the stud as far as you can, being careful again of the threads. That should do it...

As far as starting her on a -10 day, I have no experience with that (thank God), being in Houston. Crazy Yankees, lol...

No, I'm talking about the runners that go into the block. They are called the 6-port sleves I from what I've read. My stock sleve on the front of the motor pulled loose when I removed the intake. Is that normal?

Actually I only broke the stock exhaust shield bolts when I removed them. w00t.

Yeh, that's better than normal- they usually get stuck in there...Go ahead and pull 'em out if you're tearing her down, paying attention to where the cylinder "pin" marks are compared to the housing marks, so that you can put them back in the right way...
