speedometer is sluggish?

So I'm having this weird issue where the speedometer is being sluggish. It will stick around certain speeds, like 25, 40, but won't evenly go up as the car accelerates/decelerates. Anyone know why this is?

nope, the cables sometimes get really stretchy before they fail though

The speedometer is purely mechanical, so if it is spinning, you'll get a readout and we can rule out the transmission side of the speedo.

Since it is mechanical and we can rule out the transmission side of it, it's either a bad speedo cable or something is wrong with the cluster.

The speedo works off eddy current in the cluster so my bet goes to cluster.

Your speedo cable is broke. It seems like the last one I replaced was only $20 at advanceautoparts?

Ok. I've had one break on me since I didn't rout it correctly and it didn't work at all. I figured it was an all or nothing. I'll take a look at the cable inside and see if that's messed up.

If it's not the cable itself and it is the gauge, what can I do to fix it? Lubricate something?

uh no, a speedo won't stick at particular speeds due to a snapped cable.

i have seen some poorly cut gauge display backgrounds installed, where the speedo dial hole was rubbing on the pin and causing it to bind up.

there's also the possiblity of dried up grease that got pushing into the speedo from the cable, or rust on the shaft and gears inside causing drag.

but i'm gonna bet you got some white dial backgrounds installed, correct?

Unhappy The other way around - Mph to Km/h reset

Hey, so I got a 2002 S8 Rx-7 and this mod may have been what previous owner in the UK did.
How ever, I live in Norway where there is Km/h and the car is from Japan with Km/t speedo. But the digital screen and actual speed is in Mph.

I hope that when I open it I will se what has been done, but on the other side, maybe there is alot different since its a 2002 model and S2 and white cluster?
What I really dont get is what makes this conversion work other than the litle resistror being moved.

Hope I can see some solder work and just go back to oem.
