speedometer is sluggish?

So I'm having this weird issue where the speedometer is being sluggish. It will stick around certain speeds, like 25, 40, but won't evenly go up as the car accelerates/decelerates. Anyone know why this is?

nope, the cables sometimes get really stretchy before they fail though

The speedometer is purely mechanical, so if it is spinning, you'll get a readout and we can rule out the transmission side of the speedo.

Since it is mechanical and we can rule out the transmission side of it, it's either a bad speedo cable or something is wrong with the cluster.

The speedo works off eddy current in the cluster so my bet goes to cluster.

Your speedo cable is broke. It seems like the last one I replaced was only $20 at advanceautoparts?

Ok. I've had one break on me since I didn't rout it correctly and it didn't work at all. I figured it was an all or nothing. I'll take a look at the cable inside and see if that's messed up.

If it's not the cable itself and it is the gauge, what can I do to fix it? Lubricate something?

uh no, a speedo won't stick at particular speeds due to a snapped cable.

i have seen some poorly cut gauge display backgrounds installed, where the speedo dial hole was rubbing on the pin and causing it to bind up.

there's also the possiblity of dried up grease that got pushing into the speedo from the cable, or rust on the shaft and gears inside causing drag.

but i'm gonna bet you got some white dial backgrounds installed, correct?

Nooooo... Not into that shit.
