Angry speedo gear gone bad?

My speedometer hasnt been working since i bought the car (87 GXL) so today I got ambitious and tried to get the thing working (plus that beep beep beep was driving me nuts). But to my surprise the speedo gauge works, the cable spins and when I disconnected it under the car and spun it with my fingers the speedometer was moving. my only thought is that the gear in the tranny has gone bad, does it go bad easily and how hard is it to swap? option? opinions? anyone with a spare gear for sale?

sometime the metal needle that goes into the gear will snap off, thats what happened to mine, so if thats the case then its not the gear. if its not, check the hookup on the back of the instrument panel, sometimes it can work its self loose if one of the plastic tabs are broken, FC's bounce alot, lol
