Sounds like a backfire in-between high RPM shifts

I have a 89 n/a with stock everything except for the engine (34,000mi). When I am getting on it and close to redline in-between shifts I hear a pop, like a small backfire. Is this common for rotarys or is it my exhaust, or do I have a problem?
