OK, don't want to go into specifics but a couple of weeks ago a wheel spacer decided it was time to part ways with my car, and I ended up coming to a stop on 3 wheels from about 55mph on the expressway. The brake rotor was obviously trashed, but I was lucky in that because I'd just raised the suspension, the rotor was the only thing it had landed on (the frame or arms hadn't touched the deck).

I got a new rotor and threw it on last night. Bolted up fine but when it was spinning on the hub it was giving me a slight scraping noise throughout all of the turn. Also, when I put the caliper on the outer edge of the rotor would touch it at one point during the rotation.

Is my amateur diagnosis that the bearing or hub is damaged and should be replaced, or does that sound like it could be something else? Am picking up a replacement hub this weekend but just wondered if anyone had experiences of this type of thing and could advise.

 

I've had that happen to me before. When I would take turns in one direction the rotor would grind up against the brake caliper. Right in between the pads on the very corner. I thought the nut holding the hub assembly was loose, so I tightened it. Sure enough, a few weeks or so later, it would grind again. So I took a look at the wheel bearing. It was completely fucked up. Some of the bearings came out of the holder (dunno what that part is called sorry) because they got ground away. Scary ****. So I changed wheel bearings. Problem solved.

 

Hey bro, thanks for that. Sounds exactly right. I took a short drive and on a tight turn I did hear a grinding with each rotation. I think changing the hub with bearings attached is going to be an easier job than switching out the bearings themselves (at least, here in Okinawa) so I'll try to do that. Am guessing the bearing is pretty shot.
