something wrong with tranny..gear shaft?

Ok, let me start from the beginning.

There's a running 1987 Rx-7 n/a that this guy is selling for $300. He said it's running and all but theres a problem with the transmission, let me describe what he's telling me and you guys can hopefully tell me what the problem is.

He tell's me that the clutch is strong and the engine turns on, but he says that he can not put the car into gear. He said he had a mechanic look at the car and said that there was something wrong with the gear shaft and/or something bouncing around.

I had a previous problem where the car would not get into gear, but that's because the clutch was weak and we had to put brake fluid in somewhere. So I know it's not that.

What does he mean by gear shaft problem? how much do you think the problem will cost? would i have to replace the tranny? thanks for all your help.

BTW, a 1987 Rx-7 with 180,000 miles, how long would that last? cause i'm not a big fan of rotrary myself but I did happen to hear 80,000 miles was their life line, thanks.

Bad master cylinder - $60
Meany rotarys have cranked over 200k I have one in my yard pushing 196k right now.
Just rebuilt it. Check the compression is the only way to see realy. But it is fair enugh to say it is due. $300 and a good body I would be all over it.

PS: Will it go into gear when the car is off? Could be distroyd syncros but doubtfull.

Past this point, it is beyond my scope of trannys.

Im ghessing that your clutch is new. There are 3 gear shafts in your trans.
"Something bouncing around" dosen't sound good.
I have a crapy running 1974 Triumph TR6 with the same problem. It will go in gear when the car is off. But its hard when engine is running.
Try all gears.

why would u buy a car that u dont like ? i know another guy who bought one that is similar to this for $150 ! its an 87 with 181,000 miles on it , his has problems overheating or soemthign when its driving ( probably bad coolant seals)

but as far as everything else is concerneed compression cant be all that bad if it idles fine, if compression is low it wont idle ... especially if there are blown apex seals

the other thing to check into is the coolant seals

as far as the tranny goes u can get a good used one for 150 bux, sounds like it could be your gear forks or whatever they are called (these are what actually switch gears inside the tranny)

I like rotary. =)

It's just too complex for me. I like the whole uniqueness of it all but I'm very big on a reliablility factor (aka I'm a Toyota guy), but I can't help but love the FC and FD designs.

rotary is a great car if u take care of it , of course if your beating on it like its 10 cent ***** then obviously **** is going to break , even if you know if it is running 100% u still shouldnt beat the **** out of it..thats just asking for it, and if u dont know if its running right just be easy on it and goto 4000 rpms or less

thing to do is be easy on it (if u drive it), until you know all the problems are all worked out, these cars may be hard to diagnose the problem but the problem is usually never hard to fix most of the time its something really stupid that u wouldnt even think is causing it, the worst case is usually the tranny or the engine internals can be bad but even these arent that hard to take out ( i did it for the 1st time with my 2 rx7s), u can practically pull out the engine shortblock urself without even having a hoist

**** if u saw a kid felixwankel86 on here hes having problems with his car but it isnt stopping him, he tore out his engine and rebuilt it and put it back in in like 1 or 2 days..thats dedication
