CHECK YOUR LEADING IGNITION AND TIMING.
...and check for vacuum leaks. Is this a Series IV or Series V motor? If it's a series IV (86-88) I bet you have a HUGE vacuum leak between the upper and lower manifold sections due to the upper manifold hitting a little bump on the rear iron, not allowing it to tighten down all the way. It LOOKS like it is on all the way, but it isn't. You have to grind that puppy off of the iron to clear the later model intake manifold. It's on the top of the rear iron, almost centered... it holds the upper intake manifold up at the back JUST ENOUGH to cause a massive leak.
