some electrical probs, help please?

okay, now i know there was a short circuit or somethin to that in my engine bay closer to the wiring harness thing thats screwed a lil before the tranny.
its an s4 fc3s n/a. i was under there for a couple of hours removing all the old brittle tape and hoses to look at the wires, and i didnt find one toasted or fried wire down there. the reason im looking down there is because i saw a little puff of smoke come from around there when my dad hooked the battery up backwards on accident. my question is.. does anyone have anytips on where or how to pinpoint the fried wire(s)? i hook up the battery the straight wat and both batteries appear to be dead so, i am going to charge it at a local autoparts place and see how it does. nothing in my interior lights up so either the batteries are extremely dead, or the wiring is shot. thanx for any input or suggestions..

Reverse voltage to the starter should not cause any problems, except the solenoid would push instead of pull and it would spin the opposite direction. which harness are you talking about? passenger side or drivers side? You are looking for a burnt ground wire or fried electronic components like the ECU or something else with a circuit board. Keep in mind smoke may have traveled up the harness from an electronic component. Follow it to it's source wires generally start burning at one end or the other, start at the ground end.

okay an update on the crap i found out. what smoked was just a wire being cooked cuz of the **** up. the fuel pump.. pumps, i cant figure it out tho. my dad thinks that the ecu or somethin to that is not sending the signal to the injectors after we crank it because when we crank it, it comes on and it kind of feels like your trying to rev up a car that you just took the key out. aside from that, i noticed my headlights didnt turn on when i flipped the dial on the inside, even though the headlight -motor works, it goes up and down okay. just doesnt come on. and i didnt really pay attention before, but when i flip the left signal it blinks okay, but when i flip the right signal it blinks pretty fast compared to the right. aside from that the tach doesnt work, and maybe other gauges dont either.
