so...this VDI thing?

I'll been reading and searching about VDI? Had a couple of questions that were not answered in searches.

1. What is a VDI?
2. is it the set of butterflies above the main valve?
3. After driving my 90 vert for a few hundred miles and getting to know it a bit better, i've realized that from 5.5k-8k that it feels like it's a hitting a wall, not going slower but not pulling anymore either. Is the vdi to blame?
4.I removed my intake tube from the TB and noticed that the upper two buterflies are open when the engine is off, is this correct or not?

You know i've been a mechanic for 8 years and i've never worked on or driven a rotary until now and I've never felt so stupid but at the same time more excited about the workings of this 13b. It's like i've been reborn!

Any help out there?

With a fully warmed up car, the outer set of secondary throttle plates being wide open is normal and to be expected.

Page F1-45 of the free, online Factory Service Manual (FSM) shows the parts of the VDI (Variable Dynamic Intake) and how it works. Go to the FAQ and find the MANUALS link and DOWNLOAD the FUEL AND EMISSIONS section of the series five manual. NON TURBO section.

Go to page F1-80 and you'll see what rpm it opens/operates at. Same manual.

1. VDI stands for variable dynamic effective intake
2. no, http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory..._non_turbo.pdf thats the best explanation
3. the 5th and 6th ports should be opening at 3800 RPMs
4. yes that is correct, they will be open when the car is off, the ones in the back will be closed

Ok, I think i'm starting to understand this. The vdi simply opens up a different high rpm runner within the dianamic chamber right? I believe it's located right next to the oil fill tube and actuated by a vacuum diaphram?

When I attempted to manually move the valve it opened and stuck in the open position, after a few times it began to move freely so I think it was stuck closed the whole time.

I took it for a spin and it feels like wants to rev to 8k more easily now and I can feel a noticable difference from before (6-8k) Is there a more scientific way of testing this device like a certain vac needed to open the vdi?

Is this controlled by a electric solenoid as well?

She keeps getting faster and faster

edit: read that link and it makes perfect sense, thanks. I downloaded a different manual that did not cover the vdi, perhaps an earlier edition?

The free, downloadable FSM, has pictures like the one attached and also pictures of the solenoid that operates it. And a trouble shooting page for figuring out if it's working right.

The VDI is operated by positive air pressure from the air pump. It is sent there by an electronic solenoid.

Also, whats with the HAILERS2?

Edit: Ok, I figured it out.
