So Frustrating!!!

Ok so I just swapped in another motor and trans into my 87 n/a.... I am pretty sure the engine is an 88 because the resistance on the injectors reads at 12.5. Keep in mind that i am 17 and this was my first engine swap. Suprisingly was quite simple. I just put new plugs into it and replace te coil packs because the last ones were dead. I have spark. The car starts( briefly), so I have fuel. I checked comprssion and it reads T:90,90 L:90, 90. So the motor has enough compression to run. When I start the car it runs for about 20 sec and then dies out.... When it is running however the idle(without me stepping on the gas) starts to go up slowly by itself... gets to about 4000 rpm and then it dies out. I have absolutely no idea on whats going on . Vaccume leak? Timing? I have no idea.... Any help would be apreciated.

Thanks

Sounds like something is allowing unmetered air into the car. IS your intake system completely sealed from AFM to the motor?

Sounds like you may have more then one issue

I first have to ask... what kind of compression tester did you use to test the compression?.. The typical compression test will not work as it will only record the biggest number. In order to get a fairly accurate indicator if compression you need to have a tester that has a shrader valve in it.. you remove the shrader valve and that will allow the gauge to bounce every time the rotor face sweeps by the sparkplug hole. You should see 3 bounces per revolution… also make sure you have a freshly charged battery and only remove the leading plugs…

Now you need to verify that the fuel pump is not only priming but also running once the car has started. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? If so what is the fuel pressure when you turn the ignition to on and what is it when the car is running? If the pressure drops off when running the then you have a pump or regulator problem. Check to make sure there is power to the fuel pump during priming and when it is running. This can be checked buy using a test light in the fuel pump circuit

And finally … yes it sounds like you have an intake leak... but the first thing is to make sure the throttle cable is properly set with a little play in the cable when at idle. Then check and recheck that all the vacuum lines accounted for and/or plugged off for test

Now you can use a can of brake clean or garden hose or spray bottle with water. Spray the manifold and throttle body area until the idle changes

Adjust the idle air screw in all the way counting the turns till it stops... if it was more then 3-4 full turns then that could be your problem. If everything was set correctly the idle air screw should only be a couple three turns out max…

Next is to check your timing. If you do not have a timing light then go out an get one… beg borrow or steal… ok don’t steal it.. Buy one or borrow one. Set the timing per the Factory Service Manual guidelines

just some ideas
