Smokes really badly at 5K rpm or more
Ok to start I have an 87 N/A with 145,000 miles on it. The problem is most noticeble when I first crank it up. In nuetral if I rev the engine past 5000 rpm's it smokes really bad. When I drive if I take it past 5000 rpm's then switch gears it smokes real bad at any rpm level until i change into a higher gear. If I stay in gear and hold it at anything higher than 5000 it pours out very thick white smoke. Once the engine is at normal tempature it doesnt do it that often. But it will still do it sometimes. I have heard from a couple of people that the side seals could be bad. Anyone have any ideals or know what the problem is. Do i have to do an overhual or engine replacement?
I will put a picture on here Monday of the smoke if that will help explain what it is doing.

yeap that sound right, the only to fix it is an overhaul. i would go with a overhaul instead of getting another engine the overhaul may cost more but if u look at it a 2nd hand engine could the same thing later on down the track!

Hey, be sure to post the picture! Overhaul manual at http://www.fc3s.org/ or http://www.iluvmyrx7.com both free downloads! Free! Manual cost 80-100.

OK its me. No there is no power loss at all. Just a huge cloud of white smoke dumping out the rear end and into the car. Oh yeah to add one more thing. Its not just when the car is cold. After the engine is warm and I shut it off and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes then crank it back up it will do the same thing. I for some reason believe oil may be leaking into the engine while it is off. Is this possible?
I will post a pic tomorrow afternoon.

Mechanic in a bottle
My RX-7 (1989 - 1.3) was doing the same thing... My mechanic found an oil additive MADE JUST FOR ROTERY ENGINES that almost immediatly solved the problem -
I will post later today the exact name of the product...
Happy motering...

My 12A street port does this too. Mine is not too bad, but it's still annoying. It doesn't do it when I rev up in neutral, but does when I am going through the gears to redline. I was racing a kid in a Probe yesterday, and I could see him in my rearview mirror in my cloud of smoke when I shifted into third. I just kinda snickered and pulled away from him.

allright update
I did the MMO treatment and have put 450 miles on it since. Smoke isnt as thick but is still there. Might be my imagination but I believe some lost power has been restored. And my oil pressure has dropped. It used to sit at 60lbs while cruising, now it sits at about 45lbs. Thanks for all the replys and thanks for the comment about the nice wheels.

I put a quart of MMO in the sump in every oil change, and halk a quart in the fuel tank every other fill up. I have noticed my smoking getting less frequent, but it's still there.

I would do the ATF thing very soon, though. It sounds like the seals aren't getting any better. Can you let your car sit for a weekend w/o driving it?

ive done the ATF trick, its not the seals. i dunno how to do the MMO trick. i dumped a quart in the oil, and thats it? it smokes like crazy!! should i drive it a while longer and change the oil then? im puttin about 4 oz in each 1/2 tank of gas too. down time is not a problem, ive got a backup car. so what should i do? i plan on doing a rebuild soon if it has to be done soon.

The ATF and the MMO tricks are the same thing. I believe ATF is stronger, but a lot of ppl in the forum like MMO. I would recommend tearing it down for a rebuild. If there is no power loss then it's your side seals. If the ATF didn't help then all you can do is rebuild now or drive it til she smokes all the time and then do a rebuild.

If one or more of your side seals were blown or stuck you would have zero compression in that rotor, in other words you would not be able to go past 5k period.
This smoking at high RPM is from deterioration of the rotor oil seals.
Bad news is that there is no quick fix for this, a rebuild is in order.
Good news is that you will make good power because of the extra oil leaking into the combustion chamber, the smoking can get worse or stay at this level. Keep a close eye on your oil level and if consumption is high, rebuild time is near.
Good Luck
