smoke when in over drive

I have an "auto N/A 88 GX or SE, for you Americans with 133k...I was on the highway yesterday and noticed when ever i put the car into overdrive a crap load of smoke would come out of the exhaust....but would go away when i take it off......i tried it a few times just too make sure it only happned in overdrive and it happend all three times...

Is this normal, or does any onw know the cause??

I once covered a 4 lane interstate in enough smoke to stop traffic. All from my auto rx-7 tranny. Fluid got so hot it started to buble out of the case and hit the exhaust. You hav no idea how much tranny fluid smokes. Anyhow, I drove the tranny for another 5 months, but never on the internestate. As it turned out the tranny would get so hot, that it would over heat the radiator, and in turn over heat the coolant.

Tahts what 110+ degree days on the interstate does to shitty trannies i guess...
