Smoke on gear change

Hello all just got my first rotor - Series 4 13BT

I bought it with a known engine fault and after searching the forum it appears that the smoke on gear change is caused by the Turbo? I would have thought that a turbo fault would cause continuous smoke any comments would be greatly appreciated.

The engine had new apex seals Approx 20,000 ks ago so I am hoping its just time for a new, massive, turbo:-)

Brad

That's the thing... when alot of people rebuild their engine, they don't change all of the seals and everything. That's why I think its important to buy a complete rebuild kit and change everything. It doesnt make since to take the engine apart multiple times to fix different things... just do it right the first time..

Yeah, you really should replace ALL the seals, and any housings that aren't up to spec.

You're right slpin, he might be busy writing letters to Jessica Alba or Vanessa Lengies and forget to get them Viton O-Rings

Yeh I have only had the car for 1 day, if I had rebuilt the engine I would have changed everything, I got the car cheap so I have spare cash to fix it properly. Is it unanimous that it's a rotor seal and not the Turbo? If so I have the option of a low k series 5 engine or rebuild the series 4.

Yeah, it's pretty tell-tale if it only smokes when you let off the throttle or change gears. If you want to eke out a little more life, some say that the ATF trick helps the oil control rings swell up a bit and last a few thousand miles more, but it's recommended that you rebuild your engine soon.
