Ok I got a 87 GXL N/T. It was sitting in storage for a year. we got it and it only cranked. It turns out the fuel pump was out. We got a new fuel pump and tried starting it. It cranked waay to slow, and we saw the oil was dirty as hell. We put in a new oil filter and 10w-40 oil and it cranks really slow.

 

Try putting in a new battery. They tend not to be so strong after a year. If thats not the problem then look at the starter.

 

Ok cool. Could it also be a problems with the injectors?
Also would push starting it make it work?

 

Yeah the battery is fine and we checked all plugs were getting spark. New oil and oil filter....

Just get a new one, I would say.. Best thing to do for storage is disconnect the battery altogether.

Sometimes the voltage can be fine but It wont have the cranking amps.

 

Yea, after a year, that battery is not going to be up to par.

 

The battery is new, it didnt come with a bateery, so we got a perfectly good battery form my moms CR-V and even hooked it up to my dads battery form the van for more power and it still cranked slow. Also, we checked it it was flooded. All the plugs were wet. I think my dad already unflooded it now and it still scranks too slow.

 

Grounding problem?

 

Did you check ALL conections to your starter, and all your grounds?

It could be a whole lot of things. I would look at the starter. Have you been able to get it started?

 

could be your starter is going out, they only things that will cause slow cranking are

bad battery, starter, Charging system no functioning properly, or you have a major current drain so where in the car.

the first culprit I'd check is the battery, when you say its good how did you test you can not just test the volts to see if the battary is good or not, either bring it to an auto store so they can test it or, hook up the volt meter and try to start the car, if volt go below 10, then your battery is in bad shape.

listen to headlight motors while the car is in the on postition (a common reason batterys go dead is when the motors are stuck and trying to open or close)....well

 

thats exacly what my car did it cranked slower and slower until it wouldnt even go it was the starter go to a mechanic and have him do a load test on the batery when you try to start it if it pylls around 300amps change out the starter

 

I had a pretty slow cranking speed on my FC until I beefed up my grounds. Even if the connectors look good, the wiring can break down in hte insulation. Also, the stock 6ga primary leads are a joke.
I replaced my leads w/4ga and added a secondary 8ga loop from the battery to the engine to the chassis and had better starts, better idle and better running. I recommend this cheapass mod to anyone with an FC.

 

So it could just be the starter right? Because the battery is good cuz we checked it w/ a voltmeter and even hooked it up to a van battery for added power. My dad says maybe there isn't any compression because when we tried starting it, not only would it crank slow, but it just wouldn't combust. Well, i think it almost did once, but is it that it's not combusting because the engine cranks too slow to combust?

 

Have you tried pull starting it??

 

well, the engine just may be way to tight. Try to turn the engine by hand, and see what you get. Better yet, pull the spark plugs and do this. If it is REALLY hard to turn over by hand then it could be a bigger problem. However, I am sure that it just might be your starter. They aren't that expensive anyways.

 

If there is an autozone near you they can check your alt and starter for free.

 

So then it's just the starter? I checked the plugs they were kinda wet so i took em ou and cranked it w/out the plugs. It sounded like ChhhuggChugggChuggg.... I duno, it cranked a bit faster but does it need to crank faster to get the engine to start?

 

Yes it needs to crank faster. It's cranking faster because the starter doesn't have to fight the compression stroke, it's coming out the plug holes.

Remove the EGI fuse, get a new battery, and clean or get new battery terminal connectors and wires. Inspect your starter power connections for corrosion and clean them. Put the plugs back in, and crank it for a while (5 seconds or so, assuming it's cranking up to speed), then put the EGI fuse back in, and try starting it.

It's not the starter, because the starter works. If it's cranking slow, that means the starter is not getting the juice it needs to crank over. All battery to starter contact points and wires must be checked, along with the battery.

 

Just after cranking feel both ends of the primary cables.
Any extra warmpth = bad connection..

 

Bad connections, huh? I argued my dad that its the starter but he says oh no it isnt its working and i said that it isnt cranking fast enough for it to combust. He just yells at me and says the problem is that its lost comression and its just not combusting blah blah... Oh and which EGI fuse do I pull out the EGI inj or the other one? I pulled the plug and they were wet so i took em out cleaned em and cranked the motor a couple times then put em back then cranked the motor more times then i pulled the plugs and they were a lil wet again... does it mean its flooded?

 

grounds. Mine cranked faster when I regrounded my battery and engine.

 

check your battary cables, did they have any corrosin on them if so that can cause slow cranking because it spreads through the wire.

 

How can i ground them better?

 

I took the grounded parts and sanded the rust off... hmm now could it be the engine? how fast exactly does it have to crank?

 

Hey I regrounded it, took some contact peices then sanded them and did that to negative terminal. Then I started it and it cranked a hell of alot faster... Also, I took the plugs and some one told me that that metal washer in the plug if you take it out you would have better compression, I actually heard it start combusting a couple times but it wouldnt start. maybe i need to try some more...
