Presetlimits,
I think you are an idiot for telling me the obvious. I try very hard not to flame people here, but you've pissed me off.
Fifth gear is overdrive. Duh! What do you think overdrive means? Any gear ratio that makes the final drive side of the gearbox spin faster than the input side is an overdrive. I like my overdrive. I would be deaf without it! My proposal is for TWO, count em 2! Overdrive gears that would leave the stock lower ratios intact and make the stock 5th gear ratio usable as a power gear if someone (like me!) would want to do so. Do you leave your car in second because that is where the powerband is while cruising at 35mph? I know I sure don't. I use 4th or 5th depending on how slow traffic around me is. This would not change if there was another gear in there to choose from other than I might chose my "new" fifth gear rather than bog the engine in the stock 5th gear ratio which would now be 6th.
My proposal would allow for a 15% overdrive to bridge the gap between 4th and 5th. This new lower gear in between the two stock ratios would allow for those of use who like exceeding 140mph to do so more easily. You say there's no need? Well, you don't drive like I do.
Also, there is a custom driveline shop in the Twin Cities metro area (here in MN) that will build you custom driveshafts for less than $200. I've had several made for my trucks over the years. Maybe you just don't know where to look for what you need.

Couldn't you guys just use a Miata tranny? I'm not sure if the bellhousing would match up, but I do know that Pineapple can put Miata gears into an RX-7 tranny case.
Some Miatas came 6-speed as well...

ooh! i was just doing some searching on racing crashbox trannys. Info seems really hard to find, but i found this.
" You can shift without the clutch in a modern production car transmission, but it's not good for it.
There are two reasons for shifting without the clutch in a race car with a modern racing gear box (non-synchro). On upshifts, it is slightly faster to shift without the clutch, meaning slightly lower lap times. It also allows left foot braking, which eliminates the delay of moving your foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal, again lowering lap times and improving car
control.
This eliminates the need for double clutching, since you don't use the clutch on upshifts or downshifts."

I've been looking into the 99+ Miata Transmissions, and w/ the FC bellhousing, it bolts right up. All I need to do is talk to some performance miata people, see what kind of HP they can handle, and figure where the shifter would sit...

Damn witha Miata 6 speed on a RX7 you would be shifting a lot more, but it seems like it would be kewl, but maybe keeping the stock 1st-3rd. Don't realyl know a lot about gearing but this seems right to me any suggestions?

Tearing into a transmission and switching gears isn't a job, suited for the every-day mechanic. Moreover, the 99+ 6-speed isn't made by the same company as the Miata 5-speed. The only reason I suggest this might work is, the RX-7 5-speed bolts right into the Miata by swapping the bellhousing. If that's the case, then anything that swaps onto the Miata, should be able to go on the RX-7 just the same.

Im not sure if this was mentioned earlier. Why dont you guys just wait for the Rx-8 to come out. It will be equipt with a 6 speed that looks like it will just bolt in. Im sure it wont take too long after they come out that someone wrapes theirs around a tree.

Supra trannies are still 2600 bucks used when you can find one. How much you think that rx-8 tranny's gonna run being the first one in the boneyard?
We need to find a cheaper solution other than waiting another decade for the availibility and prices to improve.

I realize that this isn't a real solution, because it still leaves you with a 5-speed, but I figured out that if you take the gears from a miata 6-spd, and put gears 1-3 and 5-6 in the RX-7 bellhousing, you'd have a pretty sweet transmission. The gear ratios are really low, if that's what you're looking for. Just a thought...I'd still like to have 6 gears instead of 5, so keep thinking....

custom trannies = NOT cheap
the HKS dogmission is probably the cheapest and best aftermarket transmission for the rx-7... I think Quafie makes one (or will make one), but the price is in the 20s... transmissions ain't cheap.
I do really like the idea of the miata 6spd, and it should come reasonably close to bolting in... Just swap the bellhousings, and have a custom driveshaft made.... But is it strong enough for a highly modded n/a ? It's probably nowhere near strong enough for even a stock TII, they just make WAY too much torque. Miatas are pretty revvy, so the transmission is probably OK for extended high rpm usage (on your much loved 140+mph runs... hehe)... why doesn't someone go and check this out? junkyard miatas seem to be relatively abundant.... The only thing I worry about again, is can the tranny handle 160-180HP?

Flyin' Miata routinely runs 250+ whp in their miatas, and I THINK all they have is upgraded clutch, etc.
However, I was told that the 6-speed Miata does not have a removable bell housing. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to get one to look at; you can always sell it again.
