Mazda OEM thermostat, gasket, and oil filters. Get them from your local dealer.

What's a "pop charger?" You mean a K&N drop in filter or cone filter? If it's K&N, clean and re-oil it.

pop charger is a ram air i guess thats what it looks like at least. its a drop in filter, but the guy told me its a pop charger. It looks kinda nice but could use a polished intake tube to go with it. Im headed out to buy this car on tuesday, 2000 for a 88 fc in red.

Ask him when the last time he did a tuneup was...

You can never go wrong with just the basic oil change, spark plug replacement, radiator flush routine-- and in your case air filter cleaning.

Oil weight has nothing to do with whether it's mineral or synthetic... and the rule of thumb (per the 2nd gen FAQ) is in operating temperatures below 20F, 5w30 is recommended. Between 0F and 80F, 10w30 is recommended. Above 30F, 20w50 is recommended.

Living in NYC? It would be safe to use a good 10w30 for the winter... synthetic or non-synthetic, it really doesn't matter. Lots of people run Castrol GTX.. it's fairly priced and is a good mineral oil. On the other hand, lots of people on the forums are diehard Royal Purple fans, but (depending on where you buy it) at 7$+ a quart, I wouldn't blame you for staying away from it.

You can but Mazda OEM is recommended and will cost about the same, so why not?

I see this pop up from time to time, often in the form of questioning or suggesting if K&N oil filters are top-notch in filtration. They're not, by a long shot. K&N oil filters have one of the lowest efficiencies on the market, between 90 and 91% depending on the generation.

Is this bad? No, in fact it's the best thing you can ask for in many applications. With a low efficiency, these filters can crank oil through with the highest flow rate (as far as I'm aware) on the consumer-level market. A more free-flowing oil filter reduces the severity of oil pressure loss after the filter, a symptom that comes of high rpms and heavier oil grades, which are both characteristics of rotaries.

Many of the premium filters that advertise 97 or 98% singlepass-efficiency are pulling out particles of a size (2-10 microns) that offer no real threat to the engine. For a comparison, a human hair is about 100 microns in diameter.

Long story short, if you drive like a soccer mom and want to keep the oil looking pretty, you can run the oil through as much filtration as you like. But if you're a spirited driver, you'll protect your engine more with a K&N oil filter.
