Question Single tip Vs. dual exhaust

I've heard from a few different RX-7 gurus that single exhaust systems provides far more power than a dual setup. Is this true???

These people swore by it. Said they raced both setups and single systems had more power. But thanks, I will do a search on the subject.

Your question was about power gains, and the responses are true, but weight wise they are superior. Hence faster times.

Really this subject is more than if single exhausts out performs dual exhuasts. Here also comes to mind about the different sizing of the pipes.

Another factor always blown out of proportion. A weight loss equivalent to ~1% of the car's weight is going to make squat difference.

That sounds like something that a smog shop would say, so they could sell more replacement cats.

Dual exhaust it is then. Gotta love this site! I will completely take out my fact. system and replace it with a dual setup. Not sure who I'm gonna go with. And when it comes time for the good ol'e inspection, I will just do a temporary swap back to the fact. setup...just for looks he he. Screw three cats!

Adios fellas

exactly...I don't see that much difference over 15 or 20 lbs or what ever...sure less weight=faster car, but how much of a difference 1% make?...if it's that important, lay off on the cheeseburgers for a week or two. And yah, emissions suck ***, luckily, I've found a loop hole around the ontario laws, so take that you smog ***** :P

No you probably won't actually.

There are so many other variables when designing and building an exhaust system, that unless you build two systems using the exactly the same type/brand of mufflers, to exactly the same standards of construction and design, and tested on the same car, you won't have conclusive proof of anything. The size of the pipes is another factor that's far more important than dual or single layout.

These are the reasons if get pissed off when people make the ridiculous blanket statement "single flows better than dual". That's like claiming a 6-cyl motor always makes more power than a 4-cyl motor. It ignores dozens of other more important variables.

I'm not sure how three purpose-built racecars are relevant to street car exhaust design, but thanks for the interesting links.

the 30lb difference i've seen quoted over a stock system is enough to sell me. that is if my ears aren't pouring with blood at the end of each day.
what's the weight diff between steel and alum. hoods?

The relevance is that I have NEVER seen ANY rotary-powered car on the speedway with a dual outlet exhaust. I think it is logical to assume that they would use a dual outlet exhaust it if helped them to win. I really don't understand why some of you are so convinced that a dual outlet exhaust allows for better performance when all of the evidence points toward the single outlet exhaust.

Please feel free to post pictures of a competitive rotary-powered road race car, as I would really like to see one.

Err... no, not at all. Please state the IMSA, SCCA, or HSR rules which require a single exhaust outlet for the cars I listed.
