simple harness repair

Did a little harness repair and took some pictures. . I noticed behind the alternator the wires were visible inside the harness and decided to do a little maintenance. I also changed the connector that goes to the alternator. Those wires were a little crusty and showing copper.

Fiberglass tape and Kapton tape. . .I have used these tapes in other high temp applications and they seem to perform well. . . .Once the Kapton tape gets hot, it does not easily come off and acts to hold the fiberglass tape in place.. . .Both tapes handle the temp really well.

I'm sure there are other products out there to handle this job but this is what I had in the garage today.

Saint Gobain makes some good products.

The kapton tapes holds the ends of the fiberglass tape together so the sections do not unravel. . . .It's hard to get long sections of fiberglass tape to wrap around the harness.

What it looked like prior to repair.

DEI makes a sleeve for this purpose. much easier to install and to deal with. it doesnt have that oem-ish look that has though.

I tried finding an "OEM-ish" harness tape, couldn't do it. The silicone self fusing stuff is shiny, OEM is more satin. The DEI sleeve you mention has a braided look to it. Then there is the TESA tape (my current favourite). Nothing is quite the same as that OEM stuff though.

Rlynchsters solution here is nice though. Definitely want to keep the alternator cable safe from heat and abrasion.
