Silvia Vs TII

Hey guys, in live in CA about 45 mins from LA. I currenty have 8k for a car. The 2 cars that im now looking at are a fc or a s13. I plan to buy the car for about 3k and do a JDM turbo swap with the rest of the $. Im having a hard time finding a fc with a rebuilt motor in my area. I know quite a lot about both cars(at least about Performence) and i just wanted to know what you guys have to say about the 2 cars.(im also posting this on the 240sx) I know both cars are reliable and have great potencial. My power goals are about 300wrhp and maybe 12s at the track although im more of a road racer then a drag racer. So im trying to see what car is cheaper do do this on and what car is better. what about i have to do to make a fc do 300wrhp? I know these a lot of questions guys and thanks for your help.

Exhaust, intake and a stage 1 turbo from BNR and a safc should get you to 300rwhp.

But why ask? All the nut swingers on freshalloy (or where ever you posted that..) are going to say 240. Same goes for herer.

I think the 7 looks better if that helps. Little meaner/sporty look than the s13 (look like a family car if you dont have a sweet kit) The Enkei one is looks cool!!

depending how familiar you are with rx7's id say pickup a tII with blown motor and get a reman and install it yourself, as well you can do alot of things such as porting waste gaste and motor. their are also a number of things you can do to get the motor with stock turbo to hit 300 rwhp, which isnt hard.
i would not suggest buying a car with a reman, because i have heard many stories where even just after 10 or 20 k people have blown their reman motors, but this is just my opinion. their are probably alot of good TII's for sale with remans.

My best friend was in the same dilema. I always thought the sr20 swap was nice considering I use to have a s13, but I love my TII. The swap will cost considerably more than getting a TII w/ blown. He just picked up a TII w/ blown and a bunch of mods, so he's gonna have a pretty damn fast car for roughly $3500. That just can't be beat IMO.

Same questions were asked before in a number of threads...

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...t=SR20+SR20DET

https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...t=SR20+SR20DET

I've owned a S13 in the past. Currently, I have a FC (that is sitting in my garage). Both cars have positives and negatives. It depends on what you want to do w/ the car. If you will elaborate further about your goals, I will comment some more.

Here is one search result from the Lounge area regarding the 240sx.

to me it's as simple as piston/rotor. everything else is pretty equal.

and to anyone who thinks the s13 needs a kit to not be a 'family car' you're an idiot and a ricer.

i'm sure some of the other threads mention this but finding a 240sx with a lsd is hard and they are all 4 lug. They also have pretty small brakes. For getting to 300rwhp the 240sx is probably easier. Especially now with all the rb swaps going on (would highly recommend if ur swap'n motors). The thing i miss most is the torque (yes not v8 but more than rotary).

If you go rx7 you'll spend more time in the engine bay

if you go 240sx your time will be spent elsewhere like mentioned up above.

btw 240sx and sr's have skyrocketed in price.

You'll be happy with what ever choice you'll go.

You live in Cali.&nbsp You're asking about a totally illegal car, the SR20DET vehicle.&nbsp You shouldn't even be asking this question.

The car ever gets inspected under the hood, it's impounded.&nbsp You can cry all you like - it's an illegal vehicle in the eyes of CARB.

Right now there are loopholes around the smog rules, but I heard CARB is going to close ALL of them very soon.

Basically, engine swaps for the 240 could put you closer to having 300hp. The Sr20 would put you up to (about) the power of a TII, BUT, you could be ludicrous and put in an RB26dett (skyline motor) which would basically slaughter almost anything out there.

yeah what's the deal with engine swaps?

I heard it's illegal to swap an older engine into a newer car or some bs like that?

Heheheehe........i'd prolly get arrested in cali if i ever drove my cars there and a 15,000 dollar bond........i think i heard it's like a 5k fine if no cats?

Thank god for iowa registration........

the only problem is u have to cut a hole in ur floor pan b/c the awd 6 speed has a bump for the front electronic clutch. You could use the rb25det trans but is only 5 speed.

rb20det's are cheap and are less expensive than sr's......but not nearly as much potential as the 25's and 26's

Also the TT's hit the steering wheel colum. You could convert to a single or do a rhd swap.

The roof barely hits the intake manifold and need a 6 inch section cut out (true for both 25's and 26's).

the crossmember fit right in (all nissan's rwd have same crossmemmber locations)

Other than wiring it's pretty much drop in. Not a whole lot harder than an sr. I'll be doing a 25 swap on my friends 240sx in a couple months.......got a good place that sell them for 3700.

You can swap in a NEWER engine, but it must include all emissions components (air pump, EGR, cats).&nbsp All vehicles prior to 1972 are exempt from any emissions laws.&nbsp Any engine NOT officially imported into the U.S. is illegal - this means the SR20DET is ILLEGAL.

Don't think the CARB guys are stupid.&nbsp They already area aware of all the Honda swaps and turbos out there.&nbsp The SR20DET is popular enough to have already been tagged in their memos.

I really don't care about the fine.&nbsp I'd be more worried about getting the car impounded.&nbsp CARB has every right to impound any vehicle not complaint with their emissions laws.

Ted is right on the money.

As for the engine swaps, I "heard" that some police officers keep a photo book of various vehicles, along w/ pictures of the engine bay.

BTW Ted, when is your site going to be back up? I've been itching to search your site for some info...

yeah they know their stuff. It's their job.

Pretty sure they can only get cali registered vehicles.

impound................that's harsh

I posted a rant on another thread - Yahoo is dicking with me right now.&nbsp The site is reactivated, but Yahoo refuses to reclaim data from a few months ago - they say they are not able to do that, which is total BS.

As for the CARB laws, I used to help out one of those "shady" import shops up in NorCal, so we had to know exactly what was illegal and not.&nbsp We also got some inside information on what CARB was looking for, like the Honda swaps the cops were looking for.&nbsp CARB scares me.

ok guys, be honest, if I bought a s4 TII with 30k on a rebuild motor, If i had the fuel and cooling mods like a radiator and safc with injectors, would the car be reliable with 280-300wrhp. BC i can get a s4 for about half the price of a silvia but i dont want it to need a rebuild anytime soon or anything else major break. This will be a daily driver so I want to know if the reliablity would be up to par with the SR20det.

:sigh: Something people need to understand, and I'm not directing this at anyone, "performance" vehicles will never be "reliable". They can be reliable to an extent but nothing like the family grocery getter. A 300HP silvia, 180sx, 240sx (whatever) and a 300HP FC will be in the same reliability land. Why? Cause your gonna use that 300 hp and your gonna brake ****. Its inevitable, I mean why the hell else would you have 300 horsies under the hood? To get the store faster? I dont think so. Go with what ever car you feel fits you more. And like what was stated earlier, asking a RX7 site and a 240SX site which car is better isnt the best method. Your answer from each site is going to be obvious. I say get the FC.
