Signs of an F'ed Motor?

Well changed the fuel filter yesterday started and idled but no driving.. today i just tried to start it and it didnt sound good. Sounded like cough cough cough almost started then a gross grinding sound. It didnt sound like it was flooded either..Sounds like lack of compression... oh well do i get to rip it apart
