Should I turbo upgrade?
Should I turbo upgrade?
I have an 87 TII and my turbo has been making some weird sounds lately and has not been pulling hard in high rpms. So I took it to a turbo rebuilder and they say that my shaft is too loose so I will need a rebuild. It would cost about $280. I asked about upgrading and they said that they could put in a different turbine wheel or what ever it is called and it would increase my hp by about 50.
I am new to turbos, only had the car a couple of months. and was wondering if there are any drawbacks to the upgrade. I need to decide soon because I will be taking the car home in a week.

The upgrade would be a decent one (as long as you knew what you were getting, and knew that they weren't blowin' smoke), except that you do not have the fuel mods to support the upgrade.
You would need, at least, some fuel management mods (computer). Since you are new to turbos, and apparently to RX-7's, you should probably just have a stock rebuild done until you can read up on fuel mods. Since you are just looking to repair your turbo, and not redo your fuel injection system.. I'd stick to a stock rebuild.

depending on what turbo, you will probably need fuel mods: injectors, fuel pump, and some way to control them like an safc or a standalone, its up to you if you want to upgrade to a front mount intercooler.
I have a 3rd gen fule pump, f-con and gcc. Do you think that is enough fule mods or should I do injectors too? I have had some friends go there and they seem to be trustworthy.
The guy said that since it would only be increasing the amount of air going into the engine and not the pressure that there would be no extra wear on it. Does this make sense?
