Should I just replace my fuel pump?

My "90 vert has not been starting great for a while, but recently, it's gotten worse. It turned over strong but it just took a while to finally start. It got to the point that it would start after sitting for at least an hour. But if i just left it for about 15 minutes to go into a store or something, it would not start. But it always started in the morning to go to work and when I got out. But now it won't start at all. A lot of people say it sounds like the fuel pump. Should I tow it to a shop, or just take the gamble and buy a fuel pump and have a friend put it in? What do you guys think?

From: Rancho Cucamonga Ca,
Don't gamble with your RX-7

I highly doubt the fuel pump is the problem. When rotary's don't start right after they are turned off it 99% of the time means the engine's flooded. If your engine is flooding you may have low compression or you might just have leaky injectors. I think your best bet would be to have the engines compression tested before you buy any parts. If your compression turns out to be low, you can postone your rebuild by using a bleed off kit that Mazdatrix sells that is supposed to help with flooding from for around $45, I think it works better for flooding from leaking injectors though(?). If your cheap like me you can also just put an interupter switch in the power supply to the fuel pump. That way if it floods, you can just turn off the fuel pump and crank the engine to unflood it. BTW: The switch also doubles nicely as a KILL switch ;)

yes i use my kill switch often i haven't done a compression check yet. I'm uber poor right now (highschool) so i put it off so i don't know the bad news. my 86 na has 107K and runs really strong. I take great care of my rx. i know thier strengths and weakneses. also its freezing here in KC. it floods often if i don't power rev it or kill it with the switch.
