Should I buy? Help on 90'GTU

I am currently thinking about buying a blaze red 90' RX7 GTU for $2800. The guy i'm buying from doesn't know whats wrong but here are the symtoms. It hesitates a lot around 3800-4000 rpms and is hard to rev past this point and the check engine light comes on for a sec. It also smokes in the morning for a minute until the car warms up, the smoke is white by the way. Also, the hesitation gets worse the longer the car is running, if it is turned off and restarted the problem is gone for a few minutes. The car only has 80k miles on it, looks great and the engine is nice and clean. It also has been stored winters and comes with stock rims and 17' Enkei's. The person i'm buying it from bought it and right after purchasing it the problem started. He has given up on it thinking it is too expensive of a fix and has purchased a civic of course. He doesn't know too much about cars and hasn't taken it to a Mazda specialist just a local guy and they didn't know what the problem was. Any ideas on what the problem is and is this a decent deal?

The hesitaion is no problem, easy fix. The smoke is pretty regular for a rx-7. Talk him down to $2500, and I say go for it!!

If the hesitaion is the only problem, and you can talk him to near 2k, buy it!!!

You can always resell it.

Now the hesitation could be any number of things:bad secondary injectors, bad ECU ground. I must warn you:many guys have tried to fix their hesitation, and spent thousands doing it, and still it is there. I say it is an easy fix, but it may take a long time to find the problem. I still say go for it for $2500 or less. Hell, I paid too much for mine. $4200 for a 91 coupe.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to see if I can get some codes pulled on it since the check engine light does come on. Right now i am leaning toward purchasing it. I don't know if i can talk him down since i am going to be taking over payments.
