short shifter issue

So far, my 87 fc's shifter seems to be REAL loose. I looked at the shifter and saw that all the rings keeping the shifter stable were all broken. Someone told me to might as well upgrade to a short throw shifter. I checked a load of websites. I thought short shift kits were cheap....why are the second gen kits over $100.00 when the thrid gen costs as low as $15.00? Anyway can the third gen short shifter kit fit on the second gen? I really don't want to spend $100.00 on something as much as a short shifter...

yea, actually i did the same thing and bought the miata short shifter. i got it to fit in good, and it does shift really quick, but for mine i have to put a good amount of extra force to go into 5th and reverse, i dont know if other people have that problem but it gets hard to shift to those
