Question Shifting problem in my 86 fc rx7...

So one day i was driving my rx-7 home from work and i was having troubles shifting into gears. I thought it would just be because of the slow leak in my clutch line, which i would continually fill when it runs low so i dont have anyproblems. Anyways, so i managed to get it home.... and then back to work, but when i got into the parking lot at my work, the shifter gave out. It wouldnt shift at all, it was stick in 2nd gear and if i were to force it out of gear it would be a pain in the *** to put back in, it is impossible to put it in anything but back in 2nd gear. anybody know what things i could look for to fix that?

Fix the clutch or the syncros in the tranny (which ever of the two failed).

uhhh, synchros are not something anyone wants to deal with, probably be easier and just as cost effective to find a used tranny with low miles on it. Personally i doubt every synchro would blow out at the same time, i can only assume that there's a problem with your clutch/pressure plate setup. Try starting off by fixing that leak in your hyd. clutch line, and if that's not it then you can troubleshoot it from there. Goodluck man

awww that really sucks man , ya if its the synchros then your better off with a new tranny which should cost around 4-500 dollars .

^No, look in the for sale section. Good, perfectly usable transmissions go for not more than $150.

Ya, kinda sounds like a clutch issue to me, i would fix the clutch hyd line, like mushy said, then maybe throw in a new cluth, never hurts to put a new one in they arent that much, then move on to the tranny if thats the problem. sorry to hear that man, always sucks to have a car go down

if the clutch doesn't disengage the shifter will be hard to pull in and out of gear. you are basically trying to clutchless shift.

#1 make sure hydraulic system is working. if that doesn't work
#2 make sure there's nothing wrong with the clutch disk/flywheel/tob/etc. if that doesn't work
#3 then look at replacing the transmission.

im hoping the haynes book will help me out with changing the clutch system

i dont think i hydraulic system is screwing up because i changed the slave and master cylinders unless theres a slow leak in the line.

but yeah, other then haynes... does anyone have a link to some good instructions to change the clutch kit?

Open question: dead synchros have been suggested as the prob. Uh, don't syncros start making an annoying buzz when they start to die? If so, did he hear that? He didn't mention that in his posts... And is it common for synchros to up and puke that quickly. He made it sound like started and ended all in one day.

I take it you are saying that you replaced the master/slave cylinders after the leak. Make sure you're not losing any fluid (check lines for leaks) and make sure there's no air in the system.... If there's a possibility of air in the system you can bleed it from the slave cylinder which i would assume you did anyways upon replacement of the cylinders. From there you are going to have to check out the clutch/pressure plate assembly for proper operationnnnn. Goodluck man!
