Shifting Problem

I am having a bitch of time getting my shifter to shift into first and reverse. I have a stock shifter and stock tranny, I did just put in redline mt-90. It's just really difficuly to get her to shift into gears and I don't know what's up with that. Any Ideas? Car I have is a 88 T2.

I have the same issue. First and reverse are a pain in the *** to shift into, though reverse is a lot easier than first. I just filled it with new oil and replaced the bushings as well. Though, that's the first thing you should check is if your bushings are loose (the shifter will flop all around and feel extremely loose) If that's the case it could just be because the shifters popping out of place instead of moving the linkage into first gear.

Other possibilities..

1. Pilot bearing. Once this goes, It is really hard to shift at all.

2. Throwout bearing. Tranny wont disengage from engine properly.

3. Syncronizers in tranny worn. General grinding of gears and lack of cooperation from tranny.

I had the same problem when I bought my Rx-7. Here shifter bushing were eaten away and I was putting it into invisiable gears. Just go onto www.mazdatrix.com and order the top and bottom shifter bushings.

go to the mazda dealer and get a shifter spring. bushings just "help" the slop... it's the spring you want

Mine does this for 2nd gear only, all the other gears are really easy to get into except shifting into 2nd when driving. Could this be caused by the same problems? My shifter is not overly sloppy or anything like that, it does not move around lots with a loose feel to it at all.
