shifter won't tighten

my shift **** won't tighten. I keep turning it and it never gets as tight as it's supposed to. It's not really loose, but it doesn't exactly stay put when I shift. I had taken it off and put it back on a few times. Can shift ***** be stripped out or am not turning it enough or what?

Does the whole shifter turn or just the ****? It could be the spring in the tranny that almost always goes and it hard to fix. Its not a big deal if it is. I put in a short sifter that makes it tight and the shifting is great. It could be stripped. You could replace it with a new one for cheap.

it's the stock ****. I don't know about a metal nut...there's the round metal thing connected to the outer boot...
