Smile Shifter Spring Replacement?

Does anyone know what I have to do to replace my broken shifter spring? ?I've detached the check plate and and all bolts associated with the shifter housing and tranny is still in car. I'm just not sure how to remove the spring wrapped around what I think would be the linkage.
Thanks guys,
damon

Actually I think the spring is wrapped aroud the selector rod. does the whole housing need to come off to remove the spring that pops the shifter back to center from 1st, 2nd gear?
Thanks,
damon
