shifter problems!!!

shifter problems!!!

Does anyone else have a problem with shifting into 5th and Revese gear? I have an 88' vert and It feels like the extension that goes to the transission is not letting it move to the right to go into up into 5th and down into reverse, it only goes to the left from the neutral postion and goes from 1-4. I think there's something jammed inside the shifter mechanism, but it's not visible and I already checked if it was the shifter and it's not it because it does the same thing without it. Any help or suggestions would be great, thanks.

If the shifter is kind of loose and floppy, remove the shifter boots and replace the bushings (and possibly the boots as well if they are not intact). MazdaTrix.com has replacement bushings and shifter boots. If you are certain that the problem is not related to the shifter mechanism, the problem is likely inside the tranmission.

lol, sorry for the confusion, what I meant was that I checked if it was the shifter itself because I have another shifter that I just bought, and both shifters did the same thing, and I took the shifter out and stuck a metal rod in there and tried to shift into 5th and reverse but it still won't go no matter how hard I slam it to the right. It just won't go any further to the right from the neutral position, so that's why I think there's something jammed in the shifter mechanism(the extension from the transmission where you stick the shifter in that moves a rod to shift gears).

May be a problem with the shift fork internal to the tranny, but in any case, I don't have any brilliant ideas at the moment. It's my understanding that you need to drop the tranny in order to service the extension. So probably not an easy fix no matter what the problem is, unfortunately.

would i have to open up the top of the transmission or something? Or maybe I should flush all the oil out?
