"Shift up" light flickers instead of glowing

The last few times I've driven my car (88 SE, S4 NA), the shift up light hasn't been working quite right. It flickers instead of glowing, but only some of the time. The rest of the time it works properly.

Tonight, when I was running the RPMs up, it would glow until about 5000 RPM, then start flickering above that. In the past, it has glowed solidly.

Other times, it has just stopped working for a period of time, then started working again.

What would cause this? I suspect something in the sensor or processing side... MAP sensor?

Does it give you the shift up light in 5th gear...? I had the same problem long time ago, I resolder some points on the PCM

Pull out the gauge cluster and remove the bulb. Not only will the flickering cease, but your car will also stop telling you to change gear when you don't want to.

hook up that little bulb to some huge shift light from summit. Drive it for a while and appreciate your little flicker afterwards.

No, it doesn't give me the light in 5th gear. The idea about resoldering the ECU is probably a good one.
