Shelf Life of RX-7
I am considering buying a 1990 RX-7 GTU and I was just wondering... it has 143k miles on it and I don't know how long the engine lasts before giving out. So basically I am asking for a life expectancy of the average RX-7. Was the 1990 GTU production yr a bad yr for the rx-7 production?
Thx

the only thing bad about that year, is it has an electronic Oil Metering Pump. It is much more prone to failure than the earlier (86-88) mechanical pump. Besides that, there arent much differences. At 143k miles, it could be getting a little weak. A compression test will give you a good idea of what kinda shape the engine is in.

130-200+ depending on who was taking care of it. 130 if they missed alot of oil changes and simply didn't maintain it right. 200+ if they maitnained it immaculately.
You can take 30K or more off of those numbers if is a turbo car (the GTU isn't)

Well everyone knows I own a 1990 GTU and have put 40k on it in 2 years. I bought it with 128k and the motor is still strong. I change plugs with every oil change though and a set from kragen these days is over $20. Read a thread in this section titled weight reduction I make some points about the pros and cons of different years.
The thing that sucks about the 89-90 GTU are the brakes and rear end. You have to swap em just to be on par with a GXL. But its potentially better then a GXL because its lighter and has less electronics to worry about. It also dosen't have a sunroof or a rear wiper.
I'll be happy to coach you with this project PM me if you want any more info.
