Serious Problems!!! Something in fuel line?

OK.
I have had a problem where my engine has absolutely no power. The compression is good but no power. I checked the fuel pressure and it is surging. It surges from 35-38psi. when it does this the engine surges as well. Like the presure will go; jump, jump, jump. and the engine will go; jump, jump, jump when the presure does. I was told by a mechanic freind that he thinks its something in the fuel lines. The fuel tank that was on the rex when I bought it was full of rust and gunky bad gas. Would something being in the fuel lines cause all these problems? Help me out guys.
peace,
Charles

So change the fuel filter and or take the fuel pump out and take a look in the tank and especially at the fuel strainer on the end of the pump. Change that one while your there.

I really would not have thought a diff b/t 35 and 38psi would be a problem seeing as how at idle it is usually 28 to 32 and when you step on the pedal it goes to approx forty. Just saying the pressure drop does not seem severe enough to be noticed while driving. In fact its close to normal (28 at idle and approx 40 during hard acceleration).

Change the filters then (one in tank, one by drivers wheel well) and clean any junk out of the tank if you can.

Well I have done that. I actually changed fuel tanks and everything but the hard fuel lines.

Check the fuel pump pressure just by itself. Should be somewhere around seventy from memory. You might blow thru the fuel lines with the lines off at each end.

I've yet to be convinced about the pressure. Try this. Take the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and plug the open line with a screw. Then do the same fuel pressure checks you did before. With the vac line off, the pressure should be close 37 to 40, more steady than not. See if it still fluctuates. I'd do that before messing with the blowing out the lines or checking the fuel pump pressure

Just a note. Its normal for the fuel pressure to fluctuate b/t approx 30 to 40. It depends what your doing with your right foot. Wide open....more close to 40. Let off at speed....pressure drops close to 30. Thats what the fuel pressure regulator does in life.
