series 4 v series 5

I am about ready to buy a T2, but most of the T2's I see for sale are s4 ('86-'88 right?). From what I hear, these are about 100 lbs lighter than the s5, and they have 17 hp/13 lb-ft less. I plan on modding my t2 (nothing wild), but would a s4 be ok? What are the main differences between the s4 and s5? Are they pretty much the same car?

Thanks in advance for the help, I am still somewhat of a newbie when it comes to these cars, but I want to learn.

Johann

For one, the intake was vastly improved on the s5.
If you find any year t2 in good shape, grab it!

Get an S5 manifold/turbo(and while you have it out port the wastegate) and take your S4 manifold/turbo off and install the S5. Get some type of aftermarket fuel management(Apexi S-AFC), full exhaust with catback, an intake, some type of aftermarket ignition system, a fuel pump and a boost controller(But DON'T turn up the boost past like 11-12 psi). This combo will yield good results and not be too wild.

Thanks for all the help. I still have one question with the exhaust system. I've noticed most aftermarket exhausts still have the catback. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to eleminate all the cats? Also, does the Apex'i dual exhaust system work with T2's? None of the websites say what kind of t2 they are for.

Thanks again, Johann

Okay, catback means after the catalytic converter i.e. muffler. All mufflers from '86 to '91 TII are interchangeable.
