my 87 GXL has a prob., the fuel gauge only works when the tank is full, from 3/4 and down, it just sits on E, is it sending unti or soldering?

most likely its the sending unit. its just a variable resistor. I need a new one too, I checked it w/ multimeter and it has lots of dead spots, barely works.

pull the carpet back in the hatch and take the fuel pump out. if your good w/ electrical check the resistance of the sending unit, should be smooth w/ no glitches.

if you fiddle w/ the wiring, or soldering and whatnot, you might get it to work right. my gut instinct says its the sending unit. I think it costs about $80

CPU has nothing to do with the fuel gauge

sensor in the gas tank is probably bad or out of alignment

I do have some as well:

But a wrecking yard will probably be the best price.
