See my post in parts for sale. I meant to put it in this section.
Make sure the timing belt has been replaced otherwise your valves will smash into the pistons. JK!
Hey the firt thing I did was a search on Yahoo. A good place to start when you look at the car is the fluids, cold start, hot start, smokeing, and more visual checks.
Inhale as much as you can right above the exhaust manifold (near the fuel rail). If you smell any fuel you are at a risk of blowing up (fire) unless you change the Pulsation Damper, I guess its not a major problem. More major problems then not are electrical as everything has cold solder joints. If you cannot operate a soldering iron then you may have a problem, but mostly its all easy to fix.
Take a close look on the driver's side of the engine, look down near the spark plugs, and peer at the housings. If you see ooze or even worse, Oil like its being pushed out of the space where the housings mate then the engine may require a rebuild to stop the leaking, or it may just drip oil for a few years. I know mine had a little bit of black guuey stuff but I didnt care.
Get a compression test and a radiator pressure test. I'm having problems with my radiator dripping a little bit.
