yeah! just had mine done recently.
I gave my local dealer a call and told them my seat belt broke, also gave them the recall number. The service department then called Warranty department and what do you know it has a lifetime warranty! The guy then gave me the OK to bring in my car and had it inspected to make sure that it was indeed broken. After inspection he ordered the parts from Mazda. I went in again the next week to have it done, it was finished the same day.

edit heres the letter

I believe there was a factory recall some years back. Take it to a dealer and have them check it. They will be able to tell you if your car has had the recall work done.

EDIT: ^ he beat me to it

Yes, they HAVE to fix it if it breaks for the life of the vehicle. I have had both done and gone to 3 dealerships only 1 of which gave me a hard time to do it. They might say that the recall ended, but if they are competent they will find it is extended for the life of the vehicle. Good luck.

Yeah I went through hell to get mine fixed. First the dealership denied me, then some dumbass rep from mazda corp denied me. It took me a lot of phone calls

dont they have to replace them if they have never been replaced before, because of the recall? or do they only replace them if they're straight up BROKEN.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER:
96V173000

COMPONENT DESCRIPTION:
SEAT BELTS:FRONT:WEBBING

DEFECT DESCRIPTION:
THE RAIL OF THE AUTOMATIC SHOULDER BELT CAN WEAR SUFFICIENTLY SUCH THAT THE CABLE WHICH RETRACTS THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLY WILL BECOME JAMMED IN THE RAIL RENDERING THE SHOULDER BELT INOPERATIVE.

CONSEQUENCE DESCRIPTION:
IN THE EVENT OF A VEHICLE COLLISION, THE OCCUPANT WOULD NOT BE ADEQUATELY RESTRAINED INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE INOPERATIVE SHOULDER BELTS. MAZDA HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY COVERAGE ON THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER AUTOMATIC SHOULDER BELT RAIL AND MOTOR FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE.

All you need to know. Print that out (or just wriet down the NHTSA number) and show them. If they say "no way" tell them you're calling the NHTSA and reporting the dealership. That'll light a fire under their ***.

Edit: They will replace them umpteen times. As long as they break - they have to replace them. Whether they've been done once, twice or seventeen times, if its broken and you bring it in - they should fix it.

i thought all seatbelts in any car were warranted for the life of the vehicle by some government requirement? my buddy recently went to nissan with his old 240 and got them to replace both belts for free. they were both worn pretty bad and the retractors needed a cleaning or replacement as well.

so if the belt don't retract all the way.. it is still considered that the safety belt is broken?

Im digging this thread up because I am going to have my belts replaced soon. I have not contacted mazda yet but it looks as if it shouldnt be too much of a problem. My passenger side is pretty bad. First it just stopped and started getting stuck mid way through the track but now the cable is falling down and it has become quite the nightmare. My drivers side isnt as bad. It works but sometimes doesnt move when I open the door. Or it will move forward then move back so you cant get in the car. Pretty lame, but I guess they have done pretty good for being an old car.
