Seat Belt Recall
So, i brought my 1991 GTU to the local Mazda dealership today and the guys working there said the belts were already fixed on the car before, and they would only replace if the belt was frayed or messed up.
Are they correct or was the recall for the shoulder belts getting stuck and not moving at all? Neither of mine move at all. They said they were fixed on the car in 1999 and it could only be done once, even though the recall lasts for the life of the car.

Ok, so I've searched the forums and seen many threads saying this can be fixed more than once, but I have talked to the Mazda dealer, the dealers parts manager, Mazda corporate and the NHTSA and they ALL said it can only be fixed once.
I couldn't find anything in the FAQ about it.

I really don't feel like going in again with a piece of paper just for them to tell me what everyone there and their corporate office said, its already done.

Just spoke with Mazda Motor America and they said the recall is for the rail and motor assembly only, and that if those parts fail 100 times they will change them a 100 times for the life of the car.

If the seatbelts don't activate, then it's Mazda's responsibility to replace them. Period.

very true, if you read the actual recall its only for that. if another part of the system is broken then the dealership doesnt have to do anything.

How many threads do there have to be on this topic. Some dealers are STUPID! Go to another dealership and all should be fine. Or be stubborn and call Mazda North America and have them threeway call the dealership in question and tell them to do it. I have had to do that before. Or just buy S4 belts and get rid of that damn mousebelts all together.

On my 1990 coupe the passenger side doesn't move - it stays in the rear locked position all the time.
I just had a problem last month at Blue Ridge Mazda in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
After some initial resistance (because they had been fixed under that recall before - in 1999) they agreed to take the car in and repair the belt. The service writer said they would order the corrective parts and call me. Suprisingly, I received that call about 10 days later. Bring it in, they said, which I did.
By noon they had called me saying that it was apparently a switch in/on/near the outside door handle. They knew this because the tech could get the rail and buckle to operate by powering up the drive motor by jumping the power to it. (This was diagnosed by a fiftyish year old technition that told me later that he had worked at a Mazda dealer since 1986.)
They told me that that the recall was only for a SPECIFIC PART and since a switch or the wiring was not covered in the recall they would NOT FIX IT at no cost.
My Dad has a connection in Washington DC that is a press contact for NHTSA. He called the guy and was told that what was said to me is true. If the problem is not in the recalled part, they don't have to fix it for free...
I guess the guy in Washington kinda scoffed at the car being so old and asked why my Dad didn't just get his kid a newer car! GET his kid a newer car? Assume much?!! I chose this car myself, because its WAY cooler than any of my friends cars AND I paid for it with my own money... What a douche!
I'll figure out the damn seat belt problem too.

Talk to the dealerships service manager and then the district manager. Had some resistance when I tried to get mine fixed but had a good relationship with the service manager and he got it all straight
