Seat Belt Recall

I own a 1988 Mazda RX-7 Turbo.

Neither of the seat belts will retract on their own. I must push them in and give them a little help.

I have heard rumors that Mazda warranties their restraint systems for life. The dealer claims he never heard of it.

Has anyone out there heard of this?

When I owned a Nissan, I had those seatbelts repaired under such a policy, and I thought that it was federal law, but I can find nothing to support that on the web right now.. :-/

Lifetime warranty on 89/91. Guess it will cost $$$ to repair any other year.

You will need to contact Mazda North America to get them to authorize any replacement of pre-89 belts.

I personally doubt that they will just for them not retracting. If you are mechanically inclined you may wish to remove them and clean the axle inside wile avoiding getting anything on the belt itself.

Yeah, that recall only applies to 89-91 FCs.

Look at www.nhsta.dot.gov. There is a description of the recall and contact information. I don't know if the mechanism in an '88 is identical to the 89-91s, but you can start researching here.

I just got the drivers side setbelt retractor replaced by the Capital Mazda in San Jose, it took them about 4 hours to get it done, and they also checked my brakes, fluids, engine and tranny for free. and they gave me a list of the stuff that is not doing so well in my car.

I think most dealerships are afraid of our cars and try to find so much wrong that only an insane person would pay for the estimate so they don't have to deal with it.

I'd be afraid of fixing other people's wankels too!

Yes, there are a buch of people that do not take good care of their cars, fortunately, they found that my car is doing very well, the engine is still very strong, tranny is doing good, etc, the only problems on my car right now is that stupid antenna mast , and the door handle.
