saw a FC today.. is it worth taking a second look?

its sitting at this little dealership where i live...
they have had ..... questionable... cars in the past.. but they have also had some great stuff/deals.

ok
N/A rx7

its silver, has the 4 lug wheels on it
back seat

body looked straight from what i could tell
interior looked GREAT.. considering...

wasn't a kouki
but i couldn't tell the year just by the quick look i took at it.

odometer said 7?,??? miles

had 2900 on the windshield.

worth it?

what to look for if i go again

what to listen/feel for if i drive it

anyways
thanks guys

i paid 2,500 for mine 5 years ago. but it is not a 2+2. the tail lights and body molding is the only way i know for sure to tell between a S4 and S5. the S4 has black molding the S5 has body colored molding.

S5's didn't come in 4 lug. Check the FAQ and check aaroncake's buying guide.

LOL i would NEVER pay that for it.

and earlier i was talking about the $1500 cars in the classifieds here tend to "need work"

question:
lets say its sitting right at 79K miles on the ODO
how long could i .... rely... on that motor...

every FC needs work, don't kid yourself. it IS a used car regardless whether it comes from a dealership or not. and they won't warranty a car that old either(if they sell you some crap warranty read the fine print, it won't cover anything substantial).

how long can you rely on it? for about 5 miles or 120,000. NO ONE can accurately answer that question on any car. the most you should expect to get out of it though if everything works out in your favor is about 200k miles, but that is unlikely with the coolant seals now being 25 years old.

if it really is that clean and you want it bad, i would talk him down to about $2k because that is about the most that it sounds like it is worth, mainly because it has less than 100k on it.

Learn more about cars, then you could decide from the first visit if it is worth something to you.

With cars 10+ years old, You should know how to wrench on them or expect to wrench on em otherwise no old car will be good for you when minor stuff happens.

That S4 4 lug is the least desired bottom of the barrel model of the FC.

+1 on the 4 lug comment, deduct another $300 simply because of that and give my high estimated value of $1700 if extremely clean and relatively problem free.

i know plenty about .. pistons lol.. just not rotary..

they seem simple enough, and id take a compression tester if i looked at it seriously.

for that matter i havent owned a car yet that i havent had to fix some major issue with. and for the most part.. i did my self.

it seems like the 4 lugs are easier to find in better condition. less beat on i guess.

Lol cheapos. If it's 7X,XXX miles and in good shape it's worth a bit more than what's on the window. See www.kbb.com. It's a shame they stopped listing s4's but IIRC they're $1,000 or so cheaper than s5's (89-91). For some reason they're only listing "excellent" now; minor problems could drop it another $1,000. Still well above that window price.

The real question is whether or not it's in good shape. $2900 is indeed too high for a lot of the fixer-uppers people often buy around here. Those are $0 and up (ok, maybe $500-$1000 and up). Have a mechanic inspect it thoroughly. As you can see that $50-$100 inspection or whatever makes a difference of thousands in purchase price now and repairs later. In fact if it's really and truly clean you could be spending a lot less in the long run. If not... you can use whatever info the mechanic finds out to talk him down.

You're coming up as in Blacksburg, VA.

It's too bad you're so far away or I'd come offer to check it out with you.

There have gotta be a buncha guys at Virginia Tech or something that know the rotary engine... Then again, the car is probably a bit older than any of them.

It's most definitely NOT worth what they're asking... But see if you can talk them down.

You guys don't get it. If you say your car is worth $2, then you're only going to be able to sell it for $2.

Don't you want your FC's to be worth more?

dealerships charge more then the private party deals you find on craigslist guys. lol. problem free, I'd pay 1800. must be immaculate though. make sure the 5th/6th ports are still working properly. make sure no white smoke on startup for like 2-5 minutes. that is a sign of coolant seals starting to go and needing replacement. blue/black smoke could mean oil control rings. both require rebuild.

Blue on start-up is normal, means the OMP is working.
