I wrote in, but I dont believe this will change their minds. The market for cars of this nature(gas chuggers) is just to far gone. Unless they release a rotary engine that puts 300hp to the pavement and still gets at least 25mpg I think the rotary is doomed. Even if they threw rotaries in a car it would most likely be put in a family hauler, sports cars are just not desirable for the common guy/gal/family...

I did write in that I dont want to see them become the new Toyota by ditching their sport-car line-up only to bring it back by having another company build it.

Nobuhiro Yamamoto said the next RX-7 will be released in 2017 around this time last year.

This site is saying sooner.

Huh I could have sworn I just read a few articles on them shutting down all rotary development? This is why I opt not to care, I've got my rx7 and really don't care for what the did with the Rx line when the rx8 came about. If they offered a turbo model 8 I probably would have liked it more but it seemed like with the rx8 they kind of watered down the sports car aspect of the Rx series(trying to make it an albeit small family hauler).

After the debacle with the renesis engines, I will be surprised if they make another rotary for 10 years.

I'd love for them to continue rotary development, but it doesn't seem to be the focus right now. There are challenges that are tough to overcome in today's world such as CAFE and their own bottom line. The rotary is best suited for niche sports cars and those are also a dying breed. Every car has to be able to be mass marketed.

these things are a complete waste of time, you cant tell mazda whether possibly losing money again is a good gamble or not.

the RX8 with all their engine failures was nearly a wash for them.

Who remembers the Save The Seven Campaign? Yeah, like that went anywhere/did anything.

The CEO's decision doesn't affect me at all. It's his company. He was hired to increase profits. Stupid vehicles sell. Idiots buy stupid vehicles. Idiots have money. Easy conclusion.

10+ yrs ago when I worked at toyota, they said they were cancelling all sports cars and only making family cars, never to make sport cars again.... NOW.... They say they are cancelling all family cars and are only going to make sport/sporty cars....Mazda has been too limp dick for quite a while. They are SOL... and may go under.... who the hell is going to compete with toyota sport cars when you cant even decide what to do with your ****.

I had a good chuckle when the dude at SS16 was trying to push their cx9s and junk at us, blatant "yeaaa!!! lets drink the koolaid guys!! yaaaayyy!!!!"

...dude.... We came to Sevenstock for a reason. We dont want your piston minivans, or any minivans for that reason....

Its been fun guys. lets hope the aftermarket world still loves us.

The aftermarket has no love for broke *** dreaming FC owners, unfortunately. I've been burned myself in making/offering uncommon stuff for sale.

"Oh yeah bro, that is awesome, if you start selling those I will definitely buy one!" < starts offering part for sale, no one buys, have to discount part to get rid of it > "It's a shame no one makes parts for these cars anymore, the aftermarket is too dumb to know what they're missing out on, there are thousands of FC owners that would love to buy parts for their cars...".

Truth, he speaks it! Visit the group buy section and search for a corresponding interest/feeler thread elsewhere. Five hundred posts in the feeler thread and often ~10 buyers in the group buy.

It just isn't there for us rotary folk, the interest alone won't keep our aftermarket or our hopes of another RX line alive... It comes down to two concepts, risk and potential profit, a third could be past success rate.

yet you polish a stock part for an FD and call it an "upgrade" and they swarm on that ****. i should have started with an FD, even though i prefer my FC.

i have made a few one off parts for FDs but never pursued making them in larger orders, even though i should have.

even the RX8s sat around for ages for people to buy them, people eventually bought them, had multiple engines installed under warranty and as soon as the core engine warranty left them they started selling their cars. now you can buy an '04 for about $5k or less, depending on how quickly they want to get rid of it. i paid $3200 for our '04 a year ago, except i know how to work on them, apparently the previous owner did not because it switched hands twice and i picked it up and found that the engine was in fact still good but it was simply severely flooded.

even though the 8 is a nice car it gives me a headache no matter how much time i sink into it, it just isn't happy unless one or more warning lights are on at any given time. the engine is unreliable and the electric power steering should be recalled(my gf drives it and no matter how much i clean the system it always fails as soon as i'm not driving it). add in the fact that you simply cannot put a turbo on it without doing some major modifications and it is a lackluster sports car with very limited room to grow.

the greddy and PFS forced induction kits always result in blown motors, even at 10psi the side seals are getting cooked, let alone on a stock car they barely make it to 100k before carbon eats them due to the poor exhaust port angles(carbon fills up the trailing edge pocket, resulting in a sharp edge for the side seal to sweep over).

I'm not disagreeing with you, I meant much more broad description though. If Mazda will no longer make THE rotary... Then I hope cheap aftermarket billet alum versions come out. I'm keeping the car no matter what, but please don't make me swap to a 2jz or turbo miata motor just to make the shitbox stay on the road...

At my school when I tell people I drive an FC they look at my like I'm retarded and all ask the same question. "Rotary? .....why???"

We're definitely a minority and it's definitely an out of the box concept, but the thought of it being abandoned makes me eternally sad

as long as the basic components are available then the rotary will live on, it is the people who blow up engines due to negligence that will eventually make it turn into the 12A.

the new generation of seals have already salvaged more than a few engines that would have otherwise turned to total scrap.

aluminum rotors will never be a widely used item, nor will aluminum side plates as they're simply too costly to produce and will be a niche market. same with alloys like titanium, which incidentally is a horrible material for a rotor.. caved in compression faces anyone? aluminum requires sleeving, which will always keep prices extremely high. those are all just dreams, the only way we foresee going on is by reusing factory parts for the major components.

200k miles to a rotary does not mean the end, i've rebuilt plenty of engines with close to that mileage, refurbished parts and they're still out there today a decade later with probably close to 300k or more on a few of those engine cores. of course if you want the best results possible, nothing beats new wear components(housings and irons).

exactly right; and unfortunately, this is what people should be focusing their efforts and petitions on - as opposed to a NEW engine or NEW platform - because it's probably the best we can hope for for the foreseeable future.

It's a shame there are a minority of FC owners out there with CASH IN HAND for those aftermarket pieces.

I really hope sakebomb garage makes another run of projector headlights for our cars. I had a buddy in a MS3 driving behind me....his headlights were shining the road all around me practically.

As for the future of the rotary, someone will design parts. Some will be able to afford them, others wont. I hope they come out with a new rotary vehicle in a few years when I settle into a house and can afford a new daily driver.

Do rx8 rotor housings mate with early 13bs? I know exhaust ports can be added.
Are the rotors interchangeable ?

You want to save the rotary? Okay...there are a few thousand rx8 owners out there who need their engine saved at any given time, feel free to "save" those all you want.

Yes, rx8 rotors can fit into any 13b engine with the right counterweighting/balancing. But they require the use of the (crappy) renesis keystone side seals. And you either have to machine the apex slots for rx7 apex seals, or use rx8 apex seals and hope that they hold up with a peripheral exhaust port.

Yes, rx8 rotor housings could mate with 85 and older parts. However, just "adding" an exhaust port would not be easy...bear in mind that mazda made coolant passages run through that area in the renesis housings, so you'd need a material to fill in that entire region. You'd also need a way to add an exhaust sleeve there, or whatever fill-in material you selected would probably break down quickly in the presence of hot exhaust. It's not like you could take a hole saw and drill it out then call it a day. It is also nearly impossible to find nice condition used rx8 rotor housings without severe chrome flaking/edge wear, chatter, and cracking.

Seems like a lot of work when a brand new GSLSE housing is still available and already has what you want. And the chrome layer is probably better than the rx8 housing.

I think Goopy makes rx8 exhaust sleeves. I wouldn't use the rx8 high compression rotors with turbo. I would use the rest of the drive train. I'm currently buying clutch and 6speed for my FC. The gearing is perfect much better than the old 5speed. And my rx8 with 4.1 rear is perfect not to mention 21mpg no matter how I drive. 19+ with a/c on. I have ls2 coils and haven't had a problem sense.

Anyway my thought is to rebuild the renises into something good. That means take away the side ports and change the rotors. As for the transmission. I'll let you know how strong it is early next year when I have it in with new turbo

From what I hear the early model transmissions are made of glass, but the late model transmission is good for well over 300HP.

The transmissions ARE glass. You will very often have dead 2nd gear synchros, and the trans is very noisy in neutral and low gears. It does not handle hard shifting or abuse well AT ALL and barely holds up to the torque output of the stock renesis with an organic sprung stock clutch. BUT HEY, LET'S PUT A STIFF CLUTCH THAT GRABS LIKE HELL AND A MODIFIED ENGINE WITH MORE POWER IN FRONT OF IT, YEAH, THAT WILL BE AWESOME.

The trans is fine if you get a low mileage one that has not been abused, then you put it with a driver that is very smooth with shifts and the clutch, and not too much power. 300rwhp would really be pushing it for this trans IMO. The 09-11 trans was revised and was said to be a little better, but not *that* much better.
