Question S6 Instrument Cluster

Before I get flamed, I've done some searching but it turned up fruitless.

I've got what might be classified as a slightly unusual set of questions. Basically, I'm attempting to transplant the S6 dash into a S4.

More specifically, just the speedo and tacho, which will be swapped for the equivalent ones currently in the car. I've done a little research (looking at the wiring diagrams) and it appears as though there are 5 wires from the dash that connect to external circuitry. 3 of them can be crossed off as I can replicate them. However, two of them are more difficult. One of them goes to the ECU/cruise control unit and appears to be a "Speed Out" signal, which, should be no problems, if I'm correct. The last wire, however, connects to the 2nd CPU and that's all I know about it. Unfortunately, I believe that this will be the thing to halt me in my tracks. Does anyone know ANYTHING about the interconnections of the speedo? Is it possible to perform a transplant?

Secondly, the speed is determined by way of an electromagnet at the gearbox. Does anyone know anything about this sensor? Does it screw into the standard location where a speedo cable would go (thus allowing me to transplant it to a S4 gearbox) or is the sensor actually inside the gearbox?

Lastly, does anyone know the diameter for the tacho and speedo?

ANY info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
- Tim

The S4 and S5 spped sensors are built into their respective clusters and fed from the speedo cable into the tranny.

I suppose if you had a S4/S5 Turbo, and were using the S6 speed sensor, in theory it should plug into the same location. What might be an issue however is the signal. If the signal is considerably faster or slower than the S4/S5 speed sensor out put (say it is 3800 pulses per mile, vs 2400 pulses per mile) the power steering and ECU operation may be faulty (as they are expecting a set signal rate based on speed).

Well, unfortunately the S4/5 speed sensor is in the dash cluster, whereas the S6 is in the gearbox.

As for problems with the ECU/cruise, well I've disconnected the cruise and I'm running an aftermarket ECU Now the P/S is a different question which I don't have an answer to... yet. Worst case scenario would be to disconnect the connection all together and make the P/S not speed sensitive.

Cheers,
