i put a '91 tranny in my '86, easy as pie, just use the crossmember from the tranny your putting in.

Yep, crossmember matchces the tranny, other than that its a direct swap.

yes s5 tran is built stronger and i think has a different gear ratio

Only 5th has a different gear ratio. http://mazdatrix.com/g1.htm

I have personally destroyed several S5 TII transmissions, so we prefer to run the S4 TII trans and diff in our 91 vert 13B-RE single turbo. Have not had any issues with the S4 parts

The S5 NA case is a little stiffer, as it's got a couple extra ribs on it, but that's about it. I wouldn't say it's any stronger.

Yes it'll fit no problem, use the corssmember from the transmission's series of car. No the input shaft isn't different. Hell, you can use a 1st gen box in a 2nd gen tranny and it'll still work.

of course...the whole swap is different. like any 5-speed swap...i just needed to know the diff in s4 vs. s5.
